- TOUR: Full-day tour Naples A short ride to the ruins of Pompeii, part of an ancient Roman city destroyed and buried under a blanket of ash and lapilli during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79. The finds following the excavations, started at the behest of Charles III of Bourbon, are one of the best testimonies of Roman life, as well as the best- preserved city of that era. In 1997, to preserve integrity, the ruins, managed by the Pompeii Superintendent, became part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. After visiting the ruins, quick break for lunch and head back to Naples’ historic centre full of bursting life with its cafes, bakeries, gelaterias, shops, street performers, and chatty locals.
